The Girls, Women + Media Project is an educational and activism resource focused on how women and girls are served and represented by popular media, and working for improvement.
We are a network of professionals and volunteers who share information and interest in this area of media literacy. We also provide activism guidance and an activism network for those wanting to make changes. Read below for the inspiring story of how we got started.... |
About the Girls, Women+ Media Project (Our 'Herstory')
The site was originally founded in 2000 by Tamara Sobel, a former public interest attorney, visual artist, and advocate for girls and women. After a group of men and women protested a particularly disturbing ad that was posted all over Manhattan, and the campaign resulted in the voluntary removal of the ad (and and an 'aha!' moment for the CEO responsible), a movement was born. The website drew several million visitors per year and the activism network grew to nearly half a million. Around the United States and even overseas, citizen activists gave feedback to many media companies and produced changes in the way women and girls were represented in particular media using informative, educational input, and consumer power (not government censorship.)
Since that time, there has been a great increase in awareness of media, a strong push for educational curriculum to include these topics, and an increasingly creative and focused number of people working to improve cultural messages and give feedback to the industry. The Project has grown to include many advocates, educators, students, and people of all ages and backgrounds who come together to support a media environment that represents and serves girls + women in a more positive way. See our 'Take Action! page for ways you can make a difference!
